Overview
The Craigend Recreation Area was established by Ministerial Order #563/83 June 17, 1983. The recreation area was established to implement and pursue a recreation service for the designated area.
The Craigend Recreation and Agriculture Society is the local administrating body for recreation in the Craigend Recreation Area. The Society consists of a 16-member board with positions for president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and twelve directors. All positions are elected at the annual meeting in December and are open to any community member.
The Society operates on monies received through provincial grants and fundraising ventures. The Society is required to submit the annual projected budgets to the Lac La Biche County before September 30 of the current year. The main objective of the Society is adequately plan recreational activities and to effectively manage facilities for the Craigend residents.
History
- November 22, 1979 Established Craigend Recreation Area
- June 23, 1980 Craigend Recreation Centre and the Ukrainian Society of T.Shevchenko of Craigend agree to amalgamate. All properties and assets would be transferred to the Craigend Community Centre Association.
- August 14, 1980 Approval of amalgamation of Craigend Hall and Craigend Recreation Centre.
- November 26, 1980 Barry Romenko, representing Alberta Recreation and Parks, discussed government grants available.
- January 29, 1981 Annual Meeting – discussion regarding the viewing of other recreation centres.
- February 7, 1981 Executive meeting discussing grant programs available.The following committees were formed: financial,recreation and building.
- February 24, 1981 Discussed possibility of becoming an agricultural society.
- April 15, 1981 Barbara Bailey from Alberta Agriculture and Rural Services presented information on becoming an agriculture society – the objectives and program grants. Proposed a new name and membership fee – Craigend Recreation and Agriculture Society.
- December 14, 1981 Representative from Department of Transportation present to discuss removal of old hall off of road allowance. The Craigend Recreations and Agriculture Society would be compensated. Society decides to bring the issue of moving the old hall before the public.
- December 31, 1981 Public Meeting – accepted compensation for moving the old hall.
- January 11, 1982 Annual meeting – must prepare 5-year master plan for the Craigend Area. Improvement District #18 granted in principle funds for a new complex.
- February 19, 1982 Met with San Alta Building Systems Ltd. to discuss hall plans.
- April 20, 1982 Presentation of the Agriculture Society grant application. Apply to become an independent Recreation Board.
- October 24, 1982 Public Meeting – signed agreement with Department of Transportation.
- January 30, 1983 Annual Meeting – Presentation on the new facility.
- March 5, 1983 Met with San Alta Building Systems Ltd. Move that the Society accept engineered drawings.
- April 30, 1983 Sent out drawing for bids on new facility.
- May 26, 1983 San Alta Buildings Ltd. Presented their quotation.
- May 31, 1983 Lowest tender chosen – San Alta Building Systems Ltd.
- June 6, 1983 Decided on site of new building.
- August 1, 1983 Construction started on new facility
- August 11, 1983 Chose colour scheme of new facility
